ADAS Systems.... Going to Take Some Getting Used To!

Happy Technical Tuesday Folks! Just a quick note to announce the official naming of Sara's new 2019 CR-V.  She picked it up last month & so far, is loving every inch of it.  He has been dubbed: Troopah, 19 of 4.  You'll have to ask her what that means next time you're in, or, you are welcome to shoot her an email, if you're curious.   Sara's still getting used to all the bells and whistles, but so far loves all the cool updated features - even the ones she's not quite sure she is ready to use regularly.  Like how, if you allow it, the combination of Adaptive Cruise Control and Lane Departure Mitigation, will get you pretty close to riding in a 'self driving car'.  Her exact words when describing it to Greg were "This is so freaking weird dude, I can't even!".  ADAS or "Advanced Driver-Assist Systems" are becoming more ... read more

New Year, New Look, New Brand... New Everything!...

New Year, New Look, New Brand... New Everything!...

Dear Motor Works Family, Over the last 40 years (yes, we've really been here for that long!) we've made many changes and adjustments to the way we do what we do.  We've added and subtracted brands to our line-up, upgraded our facilities, kept pace with - or been ahead of at times - the digital advancements in our industry, and so much more.  Our clients have been central to all of these changes, have seen us through the good (and not so good) times, and we can't begin to thank them enough for all they do.     As we prepared to go into our 40th year, we wanted to find ways to show our appreciation, and shake things up - just a bit.  You may notice a new look to our website when you visit it, or, that there are Subaru vehicles in our bays being serviced when you stop by.  Both additions were made quietly and slowly during 2018.  In 2019, we want to specifically focus on our clients - as we wouldn't be able ... read more

T.A.P. (Teacher Appreciation Program) Announcement!

Hey there Motor Works family! Sara here, with just a bit more info about our *NEW* Teacher Appreciation Program (T.A.P.), and what we’re going to be doing going forward, to show our love for the educational community. First, we’ll be extending a new “perk ” for teachers & educators in our area. As of June 2018, all of our clients who work with K-12 students will receive a percentage off their total – at every visit. Just give us a call (or shoot over an email) to learn more. Second, for the summer of 2018, we’ll be holding a ‘Supply Drive’ where we’ll be collecting much needed classroom supplies to be donated just in time for the ‘Back-to-School’ season. Motor Works will be matching whatever our clients bring in – so don’t hold back y’all! We’ll also be rewarding our clients who participate in the Supply Drive. All you have to do is donate a new/unopened school supply to the drive when you’re in for service, and we’ll apply a credit to your account. The standard i ... read more

Airbag Recall – Questions, Answers and Updates

Airbag Recall – Questions, Answers and Updates

Takata Bankruptcy Notice UPDATE (10/31/17): In the past few days, we’ve received numerous calls from our clients reporting they’ve received what looks like a “recall notice”, but is in actuality a legal notice related to Takata Corp’s Chapter 11 Bankruptcy Proceeding. We received several of these notices here as well (for our loaner car fleet). Just because you received this notice does not mean that your vehicle is subject to recall. The owner of any vehicle with a Takata airbag inflator, not just the ones that have been recalled, received this notice. Of course, we’re not going to give you legal advice on how to proceed, but we can tell you that we will not be filing any claims. As we’ve mentioned before, we check your vehicle against ... read more

Greg’s Take: Things Break!

Greg’s Take: Things Break!

Not an actual picture of Greg, but it accurately captures the moment when the fridge bought the farm. The other morning, I was sitting in the office of my home, eating breakfast at around 5:15 while viewing a documentary on People’s Car vehicle design when a strange sound pulled my attention away. Sounds have always piqued my attention creating an instant need to identify what the cause is (just part of my brain wiring). At first I thought it was part of the soundtrack of the ancient Kübelwagen that was on the screen but it just didn’t fit. I paused the computer and went to investigate. My office is adjacent to our kitchen and the sound increased as I opened my office door. I went to the refrigerator as the noise was clearly emanating from it. The sound started to lessen and then faded away similarly to the way a tire exhales its last bit of air as it goes totally f ... read more

Greg’s Take: Nationwide Technician Shortage

Greg’s Take: Nationwide Technician Shortage

There’s a nationwide long-term business health problem that has been growing for decades. There are fewer and fewer qualified technicians coming into any trades industry, including automotive. It has always been hard to find and keep qualified people; it’s only become harder and harder in recent years. I have observed that our middle and high school counselors have systemically steered young people away from vocational training. There is an assumption that the kids are going to go to college. This is great for some and not so great for others. Not every young person is going to excel in a college environment. To make matters worse, they will leave a four-year college with a degree in say, computer technology with a debt of (conservatively) $30,000-$50,000 and be in a situation where they are battling for a $35,000 a year position. Trouble is, without trained people to be electricians, plumbers, carpenters and auto technicians, we’re all going to be in a world of ... read more

Client Spotlight – Aviation Author

Client Spotlight – Aviation Author

Mr. Christiansen gives Paul and Sara a history lesson on jet engines. You’d never believe the conversations we have with our clients here at Motor Works! Last week, Mr. Christiansen stopped by and we got a history lesson on the development of jet engines. Turns out Mr. Christiansen is a published author and has been driving back and forth to Delaware in his 2005 Acura TL. Why Delaware? He’s researching the development of the Westinghouse J-series jet engines (he’s already written twobooks on the subject) and all of the records are there. We heard ... read more
