| Catalyst Catastrophe! How a Catalytic Converter works and dies! |
|
This image was taken looking down into the catalytic converter which is located in the exhaust system. Normally, the exhaust gas passes through the substrate...a ceramic honeycomb that is embedded with with the precious metal chemical elements Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium. These elements act as catalysts and cause a chemical conversion in the makeup of the gasses. The result is a cleaner emission and environment. Engine misfires can cause the overheating of the catalytic substrate which was the most likely cause for this problem. Because these precious elements are rare, catalytic converters are inherently expensive so... if your car isn't running right or you notice a flashing check-engine light... have the car checked right away before you ruin yours. We perform complete emission systems diagnosis and repairs! Motor Works also is a Partner with the Montgomery County, Maryland Department of Environmental Protection.
