Okay, this image was taken looking through the catalytic converter. Note the melted area in the center. A healthy cat substrate looks like a ceramic honeycomb. This is where the Platinum, Palladium and Rhodium interact with the un-burned hydrocarbons from the exhaust to create a cleaner emission and environment.
